The Life of Scottish Masters of St. Andrew

St. Paulinus says, that having taken many humans in the nets of Christ, he showed the religion which he had preached, via his blood at Patræ. SS. Sophronius, Gaudentius, and Austin assure us, that he become crucified; Scottish Masters of St. Andrew. Peter Chrysologus says, on a tree; Pseudo-Hippolytus adds, on an olive-tree. In the hymn of Pope Damasus it’s miles slightly referred to that he turned into crucified.

When the apostle saw his go at a distance, he’s said to have cried out: “Hail valuable pass, that hast been consecrated by way of the body of my Lord, and decorated together with his limbs as with wealthy jewels. I come to thee exulting and satisfied; receive me with pleasure into thy hands. O good pass, that hast received splendor from our Lord’s limbs: I actually have ardently loved thee; long have I favored and sought thee: now thou art found through me, and art made prepared for my longing soul: acquire me into thy palms taking me from amongst men, and gift me to my grasp; that he who redeemed me on thee, can also receive me by thee.”

Upon those ardent breathings St. Bernard writes:“When he saw at a distance the go prepared for him, his countenance did now not exchange, nor did his blood freeze in his veins, nor did his hair stand on cease, nor did he lose his voice, nor did his frame tremble, nor changed into his soul stricken, nor did his senses fail him, because it occurs to human frailty: but the flame of charity which burned in his breast, solid forth sparks via his mouth.” The saint goes on, showing that fervour and love will make penance and labour sweet, seeing it can sweeten loss of life itself, and, with the aid of the unction of the Holy Ghost, make even its torments suitable.

The frame of St. Andrew become translated from Patræ to Constantinople in 357, collectively with those of SS. Luke and Timothy, and deposited in the church of the apostles, which Constantine the Great had constructed a bit before. SS. Paulinus and Jerom mention miracles wrought on that occasion. The church buildings of Milan, Nola, Brescia, and some different locations have been, on the equal time, enriched with small portions of these relics, as we’re informed by means of SS. Ambrose, Gaudentius, Paulinus, Masonic patches, &c.

When the town of Constantinople turned into taken by way of the French, Cardinal Peter of Capua delivered the relics of St. Andrew thence into Italy in 1210, and deposited them in the cathedral of Amalphi, wherein they still stay.
